Next Sunscreen Event! Sept. 25th-- Event with the Miller Brothers

Sept 25th – Event with the Miller Brothers – "A powerfully moving debut feature, top-notch performances from a cast that includes a trio of Academy Award nominees (11 in all). Ed Harris is pitch-perfect." ~Walter Murch3-Time Academy Award Winning Editor (Apocalypse Now, The English Patient).

In partnership with the University of Tampa's Film & Media Arts program, Sunscreen Film Festival is proud to present the Florida film festival premier of TOUCHING HOME. Three months after their homeless father died in jail, twin filmmakers, Loagan and Noah Miller, cornered Ed Harris in an alley outside the Castro Theater and pitched him on their autobiographical movie, Touching Home. Nine days later Harris called, he had to have the role. Not only did the self-taught Miller Brothers write, produce, and directing Touching Home, but they also star in the movie alongside Harris and fellow Osacr nominated actors Brad Dourif and Robert Foster. "Ed was the only actor we wanted to play the role of our father," Logan says. "We read in the local newspaper that he was going to be honored at the San Francisco Film Festival, and decided to go meet him." "Everyone was telling us we were insane," Noah says. "No one was going to take a risk on two unproven nobodies. Except Ed Harris."

Following the wild adventure on their first film set, the Brothers came together to write a book exploring the implausible, heart warming, and hilarious journey. Now a New York Times Best Seller, "Either You're in Or You're in the Way" shows how two Brothers, twelve Months, and one filmmaking Hell-Ride can keep a promise to a father.

Thursday September 24, the University of Tampa, in Partnership with Sunscreen Film Festival will be holding an Honor Symposium with the Miller Brothers. From 8:00pm to 10:00pm the Miller Brothers will be on hand to answer questions and give share personal stories relating to experiences on their first film set.

Then on Friday September 25, the Millers will be screening their film at Baywalk in St Petersburg, an all day event filled with workshops, panel discussions, and a Q & A after the screening.

Saturday September 26, the University of Tampa Film Society will be holding their first annual departmental film festival. To continue our partnership with UT, Sunscreen will be handing out an award that evening, a guaranteed programming slot for the top short film in our newly established Florida Rising Filmmaker category. This category is meant to strengthen ties with Florida film schools, and support rising film talent who will hopefully continue to work and make films in Florida for years to come. The Miller Brothers will be helping to present said award that event at the University of Tampa. Event takes place from 1:00pm to 5:00pm.Prior to the UT event, a similar award will be handed out at The Art Institute on September 5th (Details to follow). Awards will follow at Ringling, Central Florida, and Florida State. Hopefully other schools will follow suit as the year progresses.

Welcome to our new Programming Director!

Welcome to J. Tyler Martinolich, the new Programming Director for the Sunscreen Film Festival! Professor of Digital Film at both the Ringling College of Art & Design and the University of Tampa, Tyler’s films have played at well over 100 national and international film festivals including Tribeca, Telluride, Films Across America, and the Venice international film festivals. Tyler is also an avid writer, having previously been the recipient of the Hollins Book Award for excellence in creative writing. As if this were not enough to prove his diverse talent, Tyler is also the recipient of substantial artistic and academic fellowships through the Savannah College of Art & Design. Most recently, Tyler attended the Cannes Film Festival, where he was one of 15 American Filmmakers chosen to mentor students attending the festival. Given this impressive background, I think it’s safe to say we’ve chosen well…

Because it looks like we can only upload the 60+ pictures of this year's festival individually on this blog (and that's just tedious), for now we hope you'll be satisfied with some alternate links. Check out all of the pictures on our MySpace and Facebook pages (just search for Sunscreen Film Festival), and if you're not already our friend, friend us! It's a great opportunity to catch a glimpse of all of the celebrities that attended this year's festival, and to find out more about our upcoming events (Film School Summer Camp, hint hint).

B-Side browsing tip

If you're browsing the films by title, you may notice that short films do not have a "buy tickets" button. To get a ticket for a short film, you need to buy the ticket for the whole block, which includes multiple films.

If you add the short to your schedule, the whole block will appear, which will then feature a "buy tickets" button!

Two weeks and counting!

There's just two weeks until our spectacular opening night, featuring PASSENGERS and a Q&A with star PATRICK WILSON.

Thursday, April 30 kicks off four full days of films, so be sure to peruse our schedule here on B-Side and make a calendar of the ones you plan to see.

For Thursday night, be sure to check out the drama I AM THE BLUEBIRD or the "rockumentary" ROCK AND A HARD PLACE.

Tickets for individual films are just $8, or you get yourself into any screening with a Festival Pass. To get yourself into EVERYTHING, including our Friday night party and Saturday night awards celebration, make sure to pick up a VIP Festival Pass!
